5 Ways to Climb the Google Rankings

Hopefully you just read How Long it Takes Your Website to Rank on Google.

And you might be saying to yourself, “Self, it’s time to improve that ranking! But how?”

Well, you’re in luck. (And stop talking to yourself so loud, people are noticing.)

We’ve come up with five tips that will help you develop your online authority and improve your search engine ranking.

We’re just scratching the surface, of course. There are stacks of books devoted to improving online traffic and Google rankings, and companies devoted to helping businesses reach the search engine spotlight (like us)!

If you are ready to get to work, these 5 ways to climb the Google rankings are a great place to start.

5 Ways to Climb the Google Rankings

Be Specific

Using the keywords your customers are searching for is the best way to connect with your audience and narrow down the competition.

For example, if you are opening a donut shop, trying to gain a first-page ranking for “donut shop” will be a very tall order (pun intended).

Instead, consider keywords that will set your business apart, in ways that potential customers will search for. If your donut shop makes the best apple fritters in Winnetka, Illinois, you’re much more likely to rank quickly for “apple fritter Winnetka Illinois” than “donut shop”.

Make sense? Getting hungry? Moving on…

Be Productive

Maybe you think that creating a new website is all you need to climb the Google charts. And having an attractive, easy-to-use site is a large part of the puzzle, since your online customers need a place to find you, after all.

But if you’re going to attract a search engine’s attention, you’ll need to consistently update your site with new content – preferably at least once or twice a week. This lets the search engine “bots” know that your site is active, and builds your online reputation and authority over time.

Be Original

The brainiest brains at Google are constantly improving the way their algorithms read and index websites.

One of the most important things they look for is original content.

If you are posting non-original content, or already have non-original content throughout your website, don’t expect to rank on Google or any other search engines.

Be Patient

Patience will be a huge part of your online success once you commit to the principles above. For most new websites, organic traffic from Google searches takes about three to six months to kick in – even longer, if your industry is competitive online.

Established and verified websites generally rank higher than new ones, and since search engines have a lot of data to sift through, it takes time for them to realize that you deserve a spot at the top of their rankings.

Be Shameless

Finally, the best cheerleader for your business, online and elsewhere, is you! Engage your customers through social media accounts, claim your business on listing websites like Yelp or YP.com, and continue to develop lively, interesting, unique content that will keep your audience coming back.

And speaking of being shameless, here’s a plug…
